Proof?! All and every?

What if the parents only speak English with the children? (As it is the case with many Indians)

What about the minorities?

I'd say, the medium of education in any region must be the dominant language of the region. Just because we have 2 children with Nepali as mother tongue in Maddur, the govt. cannot provide for Nepali teachers, text books etc etc.

Remember there are 4000 language and 26 official ones in India.

One more thing, even if the native language is best suited to understand basic knowledge, it is not the case with higher education.

If 7% Telugu people ask for Engineering education in Telugu in Karnataka, it worth providing? However Higher Education in Kannada makes some sense.

Practicality dictates to be multilingual and with prominence to the dominant/official language of the state only at the primary schools.

Dear Anonymous,

All of your questions have been answered by thinkers around the world. Please take a while to browse through what UNESCO has to say in this regard. Its all available in their website.

Thanks,

"UNESCO has to say in this regard"

Okay. What is the recognition given by the UN to Kannada? Please inform.

Even if UNESCO says about 'mother tongue', it is just impractical.

I completely agree that Kannada medium school must be available. However, people also must be allowed to choose.

Kannada as a language must be mandatory. However Kannada as medium to learn science and technology is just not feasible today.

I just wish majority of us Kannada people are as proficient in English as you are Mr.Priyank.

Vishweshvaraya said "Industrialize or perish". Industrialization requires technology.

Dear Anonymous,

I have a suggestion for you.
Please use a name (need not be original). So that, even if I have to debate with you in future (over blog comments), I will know your train-of-thoughts. With that, I may be able to articulate the thoughts-on-my-mind better.
You know, anybody who doesn't use a name is called as Anonymous here.

UNESCO research-papers have a definition of 'mother tongue' (also referred to as L1 at times). That definition must answer the questions you asked first. Your questions are genuine and there is an answer in UNESCO's papers.

I share your wish that Kannadigas must be proficient in English. I also share your wish that Kannadigas must master technological knowhow.
In addition to this, I sincerely wish Kannadigas be proficient in other languages such as Spanish, German, Russian, Mandarin etc. Helps Kannadigas do good business with different other countries.

The path you suggest towards this is English medium education from the first standard onwards. The path I believe in is mother-tongue based education system.
That is because, education-science says, L1-based education system is good for everybody. Even to learn L2 (can be English/Spanish/French/..), good knowledge of L1 is helpful.

Anonymous

OK. Let's call myself 'Mimbaari'.

" I sincerely wish Kannadigas be proficient in other languages such as Spanish, German, Russian, Mandarin etc. Helps Kannadigas do good business with different other countries."

Yes. However, English is the most used language of business in the world. Hence English is most important. The largest economy in the world is the USA. English is the main language in UK, USA, Canada(except Quebec), Singapore, Australia, Newzealand, The Caribbeans, South Africa, and INDIA>

And English is a Germanic language. Hence it is easier to learn German German, Swedish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Flemish, Austrian German, Swiss German etc etc ..

I don't think, a normal person can learn many languages. Hence English is the most useful language to know.

"The path you suggest towards this is English medium education from the first standard onwards. The path I believe in is mother-tongue based education system."

Wrong. I don't suggest everyone to join English medium from class one. I just want everyone to have an option to choose. Now only people leaving in bigger cities have this option and hence dominate all of us.

Priyank

Dear Mimbaari,

Thanks for choosing a name :-)
All the things you have mentioned about English are true.

Everybody must have an option to choose the medium of instruction. Agreed.

Who do you think must provide the option?
Government or private parties?

Also, did you find the answers you were seeking about mother-tongue-based education system?

A Mimbari

"Who do you think must provide the option?
Government or private parties?"

Well. People must have the option either the govt. provides it directly or allow private parties to provide. The function of the govt. is not be a provider of each and everything. It can only be a regulator.

"Also, did you find the answers you were seeking about mother-tongue-based education system?"
I didn't seek that.

I think, mother-tongue, religion and nationality could be chosen as one grows up.

One needs not to be recognized be a coincidental fact that I am born in a particular community with certain believes, nation and tongue.

You can have all your nationalism, tribism, linguism etc etc after people have enough money to eat good food and live with dignity.

Priyank

Dear Mimbaari,

The government must allow private parties to provide the option. Agreed.

The function of the government can not only rely on your definition of government. In a democracy, there are always different definitions of government.
If one looks at the other countries, you will find that government has an active role in public instruction. Because, education is for good of the public.

Mother-tongue is naturally obtained. You are of the opinion that mother-tongue can be chosen as one grows up, which is similar to saying, one can chose his/her skin color as he/she grows up. Nationalism, religion are man-made. One can choose to belong to a different country/faith after they grow up. Even if you learn another language and master it, your mother-tongue will remain the same. Even to learn another language, people need the help of their mother-tongue.

The reason whole scientiffic community is arguing for mother-tongue based education system is not because they want to devoid people of choices. It is because, through the mother-tongue education is effective.
Even to learn other languages, to learn the skills necessary for a prosperous life, mother-tongue is necessary.

A Mimbaari

Wrong! Even though my first-learnt language is Kannada, I am utmost comfortable in conversing in English. I have seen a huge number of people around me who are most handy in English, or German than their own 'first-learnt' language.

Same with a lot ancient scholars of India, who wrote in Sanskrit instead of the regional languages. Language is a skill which can be learnt or educated.

Lingual nationalism is also a kind of national where one thinks in term of a national where only speaker of that particular language live in majority; even if such a nation doesn't have any political or international recognition.

Hitler went to united all German speaker. Nazism also has a root in this extreme feeling of supremacy of one's own 'mother-tongue'.

Priyank

Dear Mimbari,

Your words,
"

"

Is answered in my earlier comment. An excerpt pasted below.

"Even if you learn another language and master it, your mother-tongue will remain the same. Even to learn another language, people need the help of their mother-tongue."

You mentioned that one can choose his/her mother-tongue. I said it is not possible. Anybody can master another language.
But, mother-tongue is obtained naturally and cannot be changed later :-) .
If you've read the UNESCO papers that I've mentioned, you would've got to know how science looks at mother-tongue.

Unless one believes in science, the scientific information carrier looks to be one with an evil intention. Remember Galileo?

Priyank

Dear Mimbari,

Your words,
"Language is a skill which can be learnt or educated."
are right.

The question is how do we go about teaching another language to all the children of Karnataka.
The question is how do we make sure that all the children of Karnataka (or any other linguistic state) are taught well and well-educated.

If you are believer of science, you would be kind enough to go through this article that is based on research data.

Please observe, what Mr.ಜಿ. Why are you(plural) mum when it comes to Sanskrit.

You don't want English medium school which people are craving for. However Sanskrit colleges are OK even if a few wish to study.

This is what happens when the government behaves like a bully and doesn't care what people actually want. And it continues to impose its own ideology, ethics, morality on us.

Shame.! where is freedom of choice.!

Priyank

Dear A Mimbaari,

Respected ಜಿ. ಚನ್ನವೀರ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ's words are really valid.
Looks like you are a new visitor to enguru blogs. Hence the assumption that people are mum when it comes to Sanskrit.

I suggest you keep following enguru blogs regularly. For the time being, you could read through the older enguru blogs written in regards to Sanskrit university.
